Stonehenge, the circle of megalithic stones on the Salisbury Plain 80 mi/130 km southwest of London, may have been a religious site as long ago as 5000 BC. Various evidence points to ancient burials and possible religious activities.

Stonehenge is a designated UNESCO World Heritage site, with a modern visitors center. Heavy road traffic in the area detracts from the site's atmosphere as a "lonely temple to the winds" described by Thomas Hardy. Large crowds can spoil the atmosphere of this site, as does the giant fence around the stones, but it remains one of the wonders of the prehistoric age.

Some of the stones were brought from the Preseli mountains in western Wales when no roads or machinery existed. And how were the 50-ton lintel stones raised? It's no wonder that supernatural powers and aliens are intrinsic to Stonehenge folklore.

Unfortunately, visitors can no longer walk among the stones except at the summer solstice or by special arrangement. The best time to visit is off-season or early in the day.

There is a less imposing—but far more extensive—complex of standing stones and burial mounds 20 mi/30 km north at Avebury. It's still very impressive, you won't see so many people there, and you can still walk among the stones. Other examples of standing stones can be found throughout England.

Llangollen, 140 mi/225 km north of Cardiff, is nestled in a wooded vale of the same name. Adding to the rustic charm of this country town is a revived steam railway.

Each July, the Llangollen hosts an international music and cultural festival, or eisteddfod. But year-round you can see the haunting ruins of the 13th-century Abbey of Valle Crucis, a few miles/kilometers north, or the 700-year-old Chirk Castle, 6 mi/10 km to the east, on the border with England.

At the gateway to Normandy, 75 km from Paris and 60 km from Rouen, the village of Giverny (pronounced Jee-va-nyee) is located on the right bank of the River Seine, at its confluence with one of the two branches of the River Epte lined with willows and poplars. But Giverny rises to fame in 1883 when the painter Claude Monet discovered the village whilst looking out of the train window (the line has since closed down). Monet was enthusiastic about the spot. He found a large house to rent, "the Press House". By the end of April he had moved in with Alice Hoschedé, his lady-friend, his two sons and her six children. The house was a farmhouse with a vegetable garden and an orchard of over one hectare. At the time there were about 300 inhabitants in Giverny, most of them farmers, and a few middle-class families. The village consists of two streets on the hillside lined with low houses in a pink or green roughcast with slate roofs, their walls covered with wisteria and Virginia creeper. These streets are crossed by narrow lanes running down the hill. The Claude Monet Road runs straight to the village. The "Chemin du Roy" (Secondary Road 5) follows the banks of the River Epte. Claude Monet's house lies between the two roads.

Le Havre: D-Day Beaches - 9 hours — Optional Private Excursions
The numerous monuments and memorials on the Normandy coastal area bear witness to the fierce fighting that took place here during and after the D-Day Landings of World War II.
